As a cruise ship bassist, I've worked with many guitar players on ships. I have to say the majority of which use multi-effects pedals, but constantly receive complaints from the sound staff about their tone. I've found that very few really know what a guitar should sound like in different situations. Next to reading, tone is everything when it comes to the gig. Make sure you can create a good sound for every style of music you can think of. I think using analog stomp boxes is the way to go, and that you can get by with an overdrive, distortion, reverb, and MAYBE a delay pedal. I was on a ship with one guy who did over-the-top whammy pedal solos a-la Tom Morello over country tunes. BIG NO NO
