How Strict Is the Dress Code?
David, a bass player, is leaving soon for a 3 month gig with Princess. He asks:
I was told I must have a tux and wear a blue shirt and khakis in the public areas. How strict are they on enforcing this?
Very strict, David. It’s a drag, but any time you are in a passenger area you have to abide by the assigned dress code. The only exception to this is when you are briefly passing through a passenger area to get off the ship.
If you don’t follow the dress code, you’ll get written up by either your music director or your cruise director (they are both your boss). How many write-ups you get before you are fired varies between companies – but too many and it’ll happen.
I’ve never worked princess, but most dress codes I’ve seen require khakis and a button-down, collared shirt during the day. Do they provide this blue shirt for you? Or is it just any blue shirt?
You’ll need the tux for the gig. They will tell you when you need to wear this and when you don’t. Definitely plan on wearing it for formal nights.

Hello! This site is great resource! But, I am left with one question ~ Have you ever seen a musician on board with visible tattoos? ie. Neck, knucles, hands…

Hey Sean –
I haven’t, but who knows? I’m sure it depends on the individual cruise line’s policy on tattoos. Maybe call a few and see what they say?
