1) Most of the guitarists I've heard on ships play mostly MOTR pop/rock. If they have to play daytime pool music (with no vocals), Jobim and some mellow jazz fits the bill quite nicely. It never hurts to have some light classical pieces in your rep as well. Basically, versatility is the key.

2)You could play anywhere from 2-5 hours, often split up. An hour or 2 by the pool at lunch and 3 hours a night in the lounge. I would guess 3 hours a night is average.

3)Brown Eyed Girl, American Pie, Any Beatles song, Me and Bobby Magee, Elvis (!), Elton John, Johnny Cash, ABBA, Beach Boys, John Denver etc... etc... etc... Dave put together a list of the 100 most requested piano bar songs, and I would think a guitarist list would be pretty much the same

http://www.musicianwages.com/cruise-ship-musician/top-100-piano-bar-songs/

4)Probably not, but you never know. On P&O Australia, I had a guitarist who did, but he wanted to, and we had a couple of guest ents whose shows sounded much better with a guitar. But it wasn't a regular thing. If you're being hired as a solo guitar/vocal, you won't be required.

5)You bet! A good thing to do is have a song list that passengers can look over. If you don't know the song they want, they can usually find something that's close enough. I would suggest having about 300 songs on your list. (I have about 800 songs on my list, but I use cheat sheets for the lyrics and chords).

6) Proship was my agency, and I had nothing but great experiences with them. They want to get good musicians work. There are a bunch of other agencies (Oceanbound is one that comes to mind), but I can't vouch for them. I probably had more options as a pianist than you will as a guitarist, but you might be able to get a gig by the spring.

7) Ships can be a wonderful experience, with great opportunities to see the world while doing something you love. But ship life can be rigid and frustrating sometimes. There are a lot of rules to be followed, most of which often don't make any sense. Playing 5 hours a night, 7 nights a week for 4 months can be exhausting, and if you don't have vocal chords of steel, you may end up sounding like Harvey Fierstein by the end of your contract if you're not careful. A lot of guys get burnt out and bitter after a few contracts, and for some good reasons. By the end of my last contract, I felt a little piece of my soul died every time someone requested Piano Man. You would probably have your own cabin, but maybe not. You might get room service, but maybe not. You might have officer privileges, but maybe not. But you meet amazing people from all over the world, see things you never even imagined, beer's a buck in the crew bar, and people are more..."accommodating" than they are on land, if you know what I mean.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, there are some pretty good articles on this site that will give you a taste of life at sea. I was on ships for 5 years, and I had the time of my life. I've been to all 7 continents (including Antarctica), seen the Great Wall of China, La Sagrada Famiglia, The Sistine Chapel, the fjords of Norway, Venice, the Acropolis, Eva Peron's grave, Borobodur, the Istanbul spice market, and the Sydney Opera House. After a year away, I miss it like crazy sometimes. And though I don't think I would ever go back, I don't regret it for a second.

Ive been reading up on what it takes to a be a solo acoustic performer aboard a cruise ship and have a few questions

Whats the general type of music i should have ready in my repetoire?

how much would i be playing a day roughly?

Examples of tunes the audience on board usually like to hear?

Will i be expected to perform with the showband as my sight reading skills are quite poor

Is taking requests part of the gig?

how long between applying and getting out there, im hoping to be on board a ship by end of april

Any general information regarding this type of gig would be helpful, ive never done this type of gig before so anything would be helpful

thanks

Y'know, for all the bad rap musicians on cruise ships get, they often end up the heros. In 1991, the MTS Oceanos ran into a storm on her way to Durban, and started to sink. The Captain and the senior officers abandoned ship before it was fully evacuated, leaving it up to the cruise director, a magician and 2 musicians to coordinate the rescue efforts. They managed to get everyone off safely. This is a link to their story. it's pretty scary stuff. There were a few times on ships where I felt much better prepared to deal with an emergency than the senior officers, and that's not a good feeling to have.

Unfortunately, it comes to my attention that the first identified victim, and only crew member confirmed dead so far, was in fact a musician: violinist Sandor Feher of Hungary. Also still unaccounted for is an Italian drummer, Giuseppe Girolamo. Reports are that both men were last seen assisting passengers.

Link to article

For my part, all of the ships I've worked have been regulated by the U.S. Coast Guard, and safety was taken seriously. I have no reason to believe the Italian authorities are any less strict; certainly the Italian officers I've sailed with have been as hard-assed as any. And nothing I've heard about the Concordia crew's handling of the situation impugns them in any way.

But I should note that, while safety drills and procedures are always thorough, as far as the non-seafaring personnel are concerned the training consists mainly of where to go, when to go there, and how to get there. Beyond that, the expectation is pretty much to await instructions from the bridge officers. And from the accounts of this accident, it sounds like the crew did just that.

Although it is surprising that there seems to have been so little guidance from the senior officers (and surely there will be more details to come, but we do know both the Captain and Staff Captain were not onboard), it is far more preposterous to suggest that the entire ship's complement of over 1,000 were negligent!

One of my friends posted this in her notes this morning:

Here is an account of the events that followed the Costa Concordia striking a reef and sinking off the coast of Italy on Friday evening...written by the Guest Service Manager Manager of the Concordia, who joined the ship on the 13th of January, presumably in Civitavecchia...

"Unfortunately I don't have my nametag to photograph, because I lost at sea, along with my camera! My name is Katia Keyvanian, I am The GSM (Guest Service Manager) embarked on the 13th of January to substitute my colleague on the Concordia. I can write only a few lines, as I have a train to catch to go home! I would love to be invited by Giletti, Mentana, Vinci and all the other journalists, who without knowledge of the facts and who without verifying their sources, only write nonsense! I wish I could respond to the flood of nonsense and lies that have been said! But for now, until I can say more I can only say this; 'We evacuated 4000 people in the dark, with the ship inclined on it's side, in less than two hours! Those who are "incompetent" are not able to do this.

It is not true that the captain was first to leave the ship. I was on the last boat and he remained attached to the railing of deck 3, while the ship was sinking. Shame on you incompetent journalists who wrote that he was the first to leave! I was on the lifeboat, that was sailing away and about to be crushed by the hoist of the sinking ship, which was about to break through our roof. We pulled a lot of guests into the lifeboat who had ended up in the sea, and as we undressed a girl in wet clothes to cover her with a blanket, a guest filmed us with his phone! Shame on you!

We executed a rescue operation at sea, and as we pulled another gentleman out of the water, me with a rope tied around my wrist for more strength to pull him up, another man was taking pictures!

Shame on you! we had to manage a flock of sheep in jeopardy and then are told that we were
incompetent?! Shame on you! While I was inclined to release people who were pushing and screaming, one by one into the boat, a large man who was obviously a passenger smoked a cigarette. When I asked "What the fuck are you doing smoking a cigarette in this state, in the dark, with fuel that could come out of the boat?!" and his response was "I need it for stress.

I have one thing more to add, before I miss my train ......... We worked for the guests, to save them, to take them to safety, if they are saved, it is only thanks to us alone, all the crew, who did everything. We do not want to be thanked, NO, we have only done our duty, but we do not want to hear all the nonsense, lies, and more lies, just to give you the "scoop" of these so called broadcasts.

4000 PEOPLE IN TWO HOURS, IN THE DARK ... with the ship tilted, we took them WE, THE STAFF CONCORDIA TO SHORE. They did not go themselves in buckets and shovels themselves to the shore! We brought them!!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the residents of Isola del Giglio, the mayor, who came on board, to verify the situation, (not knowing who he was because he did not have a life jacket!) Thank you with all my heart all, all the islanders who worked for all of us, with maximum availability, giving us their colorful blankets, some even knitted of crochet, looking for cell phone chargers, and so much more. Thanks to all of them. Now I'm off to catch a train and go home. See you soon. Oh, I forgot .... one more thing I would like to say "Shame on you!!"

I agree, I am scheduled to start a contract playing on a cruise ship next month and am not getting cold feet about it because of the Costa crash. Very occasionally there are incidents, but they are isolated instances that are few and far between.

Well, I am actually ona cruise ship now. I am on the Carnival Legend as the Piano Bar entertainer and I have to say that safety here is the same as it is in all my experiecnes of ships - very very good. It would seem after listening to the recordings of the exchanges between the captain of the Costa Vessel and the Italian Coastguard that the captain did leave the ship unlawfully and was told to return. When asked how many people on board - he didn't even know! Unbelievable. Every captain, First Officer, Staff Captain and Security Officer I have ever met has been fantastically professional and insprire confidence in their abilities so my summation is that this accident was probably avoidable and more to the point was handled by a very poor captain. Has it affected my confidence in the ship I am on? Not one bit

As a some-time ship musician myself I often follow news stories about the industry, and this is clearly a very major and unfortunate situation. Obviously there's a lot of speculation and hindsight going on out there, much but not all of which is certainly mis-informed. But it does call into question a lot of the safety procedures and management practices on this line in particular (or maybe all cruise lines).

Has anybody here worked for Costa? or got friends on the ship? What have you experienced or heard about, and how does it relate to your perception of how this accident unfolded? Was it bound to happen the way things are run there? Or was it really a freak occurrence that could have happened to any ship?

More generally, what does this news do to your thoughts about continuing to work on ships, or doing so for the first time?

Most dance bands on ships will play 3-5 45 minute sets a night, and not necessarily in a row. these bands will sometimes play Sailaway sets and deck sets. So if it's a sea day, it may be 2 sets by the pool in the afternoon and 3 sets at night. A port day would be just evening sets, but they may be split up, like 5-7 cocktail sets and 9-12 pop/rock/disco stuff.

Classical guitar gigs are rare, but they do exist. More common is the guitarist/vocalist who'll perform pop songs in one of the bars. Usually, it's three 45 minute sets a night, but sometimes up to five. For this type of gig, it's best to have about 100-200 songs, and bass/drum tracks. A lot of this gig is banter with the crowd, like in a piano bar, so you could probably get away with only singing about 8-10 songs a set. Unfortunately, most cruise lines are cutting the number of musicians they hire. The easiest way to find out what type of ship work there is for you is to contact an agency. I was with Proship for 5 years, and I always found them helpful and friendly. (Full disclosure - I know quite a few of the agents there. They're super nice)

Hi Alberto -

I never saw a guitarist that played only classical guitar. The guitarist on my ship played the classical guitar sets as well as other kinds of music (they were members of the show band). But - I have heard that some ships do have classical guitar (only) positions, so you should pursue the gig.

You should have a good 4-5 hours of material ready to play. The talent agencies may say something else, but you'll be ok with 4-5 hours. As you do the gig you'll probably continue to build your rep as you go.

Q: What are the most requested songs in the piano bar?
A: Depends: Restaurant or Popular Bar? Country Club or Political Fundraiser? Old School Jazz or Old School Top 40? Romantic instrumentals or in-your-face 70's Led Zeppelin? Christmas tunes or elevator music?

There are actual piano bars where I'm from but it pays to diversify... anything goes if you know how to play requests.

I carry an inexpensive electronic tablet for chord charts & lyrics, if needed (and I utilized 4x6 index cards before that). Since an electronic tablet (PC, iPad, Archos, cellphone, etc) has its own lighted screen, there's no need to carry an other illumination. And a $1.99 business card holder from Office Max will prop up the smaller tablets and cell phones just nicely.

Q: Are there many requests for the old standards?
A: Depends (see above)... but the short answer is YES. For ideas of which tunes to play, go to Amazon.com, look up the popular singers or bands for you particular category.. and "make a list" of the songs on their “Best Of” albums. If you recognize the tune, LEARN IT!

As a reference, check out my PIANO SONGLIST (in printable PDF format) on the "F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions)"page at:

http://www.RobertJohnsonPiano.com

I try to cover all the bases... so I play a wide variety as I can! My specialty is playing hard rock / pop tunes with a cocktail piano flair. I can't complain when the paychecks go thru...

Hey Lance that was great. I have just landed my gig as Piano Entertainer with Carnival and I am SO happy that my video audition (I am British but residing in Greece....its a long story!)although demanding did not involve a sight reading test which I would have clearly failed. I think what you have done is brilliant because it does show the realities of the standards that are expected by cruise lines and professional gigs in general. I am sick of hearing people throwing around the phrase "only good enough for cruise ships" when the truth is that to get a gig on a ship requires a level of skill that is beyond many players, that is before we get to the mindset required to survive long contracts. I have worked for many cruise lines before including the tiny Seabourn ships and that is suffocating anyway. Hats off to you and I wish you every success.

I've been in touch with them over the past few months since the audition, but no contracts yet. I've let them know what my availability is, hopefully something works out. This was the first of three auditions I did. The other two had similar requirements, and by the time of the third audition, I was able to blaze through it quickly which impressed the recruiter. He offered me a contract a few days later.

Some cruise ships, like Disney Cruise Lines for example, will hire you if you are 19 (legal age in Canada). Some fellow cast mates of mine on a Disney contract were right out of high school. Of course they were not allowed to drink, as it is an american company with a legal drinking age of 21 on board. But that didn't stop them from being hired. They were however production performers in the main stage shows. For solo Singing gigs I believe it would be the same on other ships, It's not so much your age, but your experience that will work to your advantage. Good luck!
