I have been searching for a musician that has created any steady income stream giving Skype Lessons. I think Funkyguitar has such a good response from his personal experience. His response may indicate why Skype lessons have not yet come about. I do however think online lessons have a future, but I suspect they will be more successful with 'branded' and known musicians.

Hi Everyone!
I just found this website this morning and already love it! I usually do not take part in forums, but when I found this one I knew I just had to register!
I work in the activities dept in a nursing home that has locations all over the place, and have to say you have been given great advice. We have paid musicians anywhere from 50-150 per hour, but I am sure you could get more at an assisted living/ind.living facility like where my husband works.
I am a musician myself (pianist), and after learning/observing the other musicians doing this I think I am gonna give it a try.
I am just not sure how to report the income at tax time, so I could use some advice if anyone has that experience thanks!

Hi. I came across this site while searching for Garageband Forums. I have nothing but praise having pre-mastered 2 albums using a combination of Wavepad, Amadeus Pro and Garageband. However what I'm most proud of is my new (3rd) album that has been picked up by a record label in Europe and bar the final mastering, the complete kit & kaboodle was done in Garageband. A few months back I started out experimenting with the virtual keyboards, effects and loops to really improve my technical skills (mainly mixing and mastering), however over the space of 3 months I ended up recording nearly 100 minutes of music. I uploaded some tracks onto soundcloud which caught the eye of a record company. I'm pleased to say that a 45 minute album of music from those sessions had worldwide release last week (the album is called Ambient Drift).
What I kept finding was the more I played with Garageband the more I discovered. It is an incredibly powerful tool and I dismiss other musicians who view it as "just a toy". It's great to read some of the "success" stories on this page and I look forward to discovering the music mentioned above.
All the best with your creative endeavours

I've been reading Inner Game of Music, and I generally like it. It has a lot of techniques to make you focus on playing and shutting up "Self 1." He does admit that like any other game, it's an ongoing process and sometimes old methods don't work and you'll have to come up with your own.

(Hmmm. Maybe that's why people like Inner Game of Tennis better, because obviously methods for tennis won't exactly suit music forcing you to come up with your own ways to win the game.)

As far as your specific problem David, while I've been reading the book, I have thought that some of these things might help you.

My big issue that I may have mentioned before has been getting ready for the gig. I'm usually okay once I'm focused on playing, but those times when I'm away from the piano ol' Self 1 starts getting out of control. Using techniques of allowing Self 2 to do its thing without interference from Self 1 doesn't work, so I have to be on my toes to stop Self 1 before it gets going. It's working so far, but I haven't been giving it much to worry about lately.

It worked great. The left hand for uke is largely the same as guitar, so I just wanted help learning all the cool uke-specific right hand techniques. We covered a lot of ground quickly.

Generally speaking, I feel Skype lessons are going to work best for students who can already play a little already.

If you go to school, then ask your teachers. They are the greatest resource you have right now, and they will be the greatest resource for quite some time. They would be the ones knowing what's going in locally in the summer.

You might want to ask the office of the music department at your school. They are the ones that would receive requests to hire students. Many local organizations will send emails to schools in order to get reliable, talented students to help during the summer. I got a lot of great gigs that way when I was an undergrad.

As far as session musician in LA, as far as I know and depending on how old they are now, when you'll be ready to take those gigs, Tim, Dean and George will still the ones taking over all the sessions.

As to my knowledge, there's still a marginal session scene in LA for things like movie soundtracks and pop albums. Guitarists like Tim Pierce, Dean Parks and George Doering are still mostly doing session work for a living, as far as I know. I'm interested in touring sideman gigs as well.
I go to school in Los Angeles, but my hometown is in the north San Francisco bay area.

At least MissusTurner has Internet access from some kind sources. Wishing her the best.

As a side-note: I recently posted a response to one of her earlier postings about finding gigs... but it still applies to her more than ever. It was about using Facebook for networking.

Some of us don't have the time, desire or habit of reading every post that everyone has ever made before they comment on a single current thread. The MW site is a great resource on a lot of issues, but as in real life, there are always individual misinterpretations due to the text format we utilize here.

Lets make forum about the music and the constructive sharing of individual ideas and opinions expressed by the talented artists here... as MusicianWages intended.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a full-time session player anymore. That's a thing of the past. But Broadway could be a good plan.

You could try for a summer stock gig at a regional theater. Where are you located?

Hi everyone! I've read the Inner Game book and have to say, once you get your head around the Self 1/Self 2 aspect, I found it helped me a lot and the exercises it gives work brilliantly! Would really recommend it.

Regarding nerves, I've never had a problem with them as such. They're always there but I find if I tell myself that I'm not nervous, or if someone asks and I say no, they don't tend to be a problem. That may seem like a strange way of dealing with them but if you look at it the other way, as in telling yourself you are nervous, chances are you will be nervous!

Hi all-

I'm new to the forum, but I've been reading this site for months and it's been so helpful to me. I'm a rock/jazz guitarist entering into the second half of my first year of college, and I'm looking to work a music-related gig for the 2.5-3 months I have off for summer vacation. I'm curious if anybody has any advice or ideas as to where I might be able to find a resume-building job that would last only the summer, and provide for some networking opportunities. My long-term career goals are to either work in Broadway pits, or work as a close to full-time session musician. Any help would be appreciated; thanks in advance!

Ok, I take your point. Sorry it did come across a little abrasive but I still stand by my points. I am afraid that comparing professional nerves to what to play to impress your girlfriend in a music shop is a not really on is it? However, as for your the other points you are quite right that it is often down to your approach and you can decide ahead of time how you choose to react even though you cannot change how you may feel inside. All friends now?
