Hi. I've read several posts on this site regarding how to apply as a band on a cruise ship, but I want to know how feasible is for latin american musicians (like me) to apply on most of the links and pages they provide?

Thanks and appreciate any reply <img src="http://www.musicianwages.com/forums/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/kopete/smile.png" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

I just wanted to share a bit of what's been going on with me lately. I just moved to LA a couple months ago and I've been doing a lot of the things that are talked about on the site here. Trying to network, gig, find other keyboardists and musicians, music directors, etc. It's been hard but I've had a bit of success so far. I've met some really cool people and I'm starting to get some cool opportunities. Tomorrow (saturday night) I have a gig with a band I've been playing in at The Whiskey a Go Go here in LA. It's a famous place on the west coast and a good step up for me in terms of experience. I'm excited and very glad to be apart of this.

Anybody here play places like the Whiskey or the Roxy or places like that? What were your experiences?

Is it unethical to take a church job if you don't believe in what the church is preaching?

This is a question I thought a lot about before I took my church job, and I'm not sure I've ever come up with a good answer. I'd like to hear other people's thoughts.

So I've been researching and becoming more aware of these kinds of groups and I'm not exactly sure one would call them. But I just wanted to get some people talking about this to better understand it.

There are groups that I guess you would call Show Bands or Orchestras (not traditional symphonic orchestras), or whatever. They're like cruise ship music groups but not involved with cruise ships. They have a ton of musicians on staff and put together all kinds of different band and ensemble arrangements and do all manner of weddings and corporate events etc. Has anyone had any experience with these types of companies (other than cruise ship gigs)? I've been interested in cruise ship gigs before but I think I'd be more interested in these kinds of companies because they're on the mainland.

Here's some major ones I've found so far in the LA area. They do major events like celebrity's parties and such.
http://www.westcoastmusic.com/html/index.php
http://www.waynefoster.com/

This one seems slightly more run-of-the-mill.
http://www.themusicconnectionorchestra.com/

Would you say that these companies are just like the ones on cruise ships which are talked about extensively in this blog already?

I'm going to try to apply to these places, but I wonder if I'm even of high enough caliber to compete.

Anybody know of any others like these in their city?

gehwokka on "Online Tool for Calculating a Gig Bid/Price"

I've posted about this tool before, but Musician Wages (and this forum) is obviously the best place to remind musicians about this tool, so here goes:

gigcalc.gehwokka.com

With this tool bands and musicians can calculate a rational, fair, ballpark figure to quote when negotiating for a gig.

Gigcalc has helped many musicians and bands (especially bands that travel!) with establishing a fair rate for their services.

I am the creator of gigcalc - I created it because I've watched for too long the trials and tribulations of friends who are still working and gigging! If you've suggestions on improving it I'd love to hear them. If you find the tool valuable consider "liking" it or telling other musicians! And I gotta mention - the tool is supported by ads - by visiting these ad sites you keep the tool alive!

Thanks!

I just got a gig playing piano in a really nice hotel lounge. They've got a really nice baby grand and would like some nice music for ambiance for a couple hours. Has anybody played gigs like this much? What kind of music do you like to play for this sort of thing? I'm going to be putting together a nice blend of classical, jazz standards and pop songs.

They're not offering any money right now as this is mostly a pet project of one of the main employees there. They would like to have me play as often as I could manage but I can't commit to that for free all the time. I wouldn't mind doing it for free once in a while just for the exposure. Their primary offer however is that they will keep me as their primary pianist to recommend as they host many wedding and social events there.

Does anyone have any tips for how to get the most out of this kind of opportunity? Are there any suggestions to make this a regular paying gig with the hotel?

I'm trying to stay active as a musician and find work as an accompanist wherever I can get it. I've emailed people, churches, high schools and so on, asking if they were looking for an accompanist for their music based needs and sending them my resume. I'm about to email a well known community theatre organization in the city where I live and I'm wondering, what is the best way to cold call or email or contact someone about getting a gig? Does anyone have suggestions on how to word an email or a phone call?
