I've found it's comparatively rare in our field for a job posting to ask for "salary requirements", but sometimes it does happen. How do you all go about deciding what to quote? I'm not necessarily asking for specific numbers (unless you feel it's helpful to share).

Do you give a salary range or a more specific figure? (This is usually for long-term engagements rather than single gigs.) Or do you avoid the issue by saying "negotiable" and "depending on budget", etc.? And what resources have helped you come up with your figure?

Finally, because I gather this is a common request in the "Real World" of job-seeking, but seems to be unusual for musical jobs, does it raise a red flag at all when a company does ask? As in: "Let's see how cheap we can get this poor sap??" Or, is it a good thing, meaning we can come in ahead and say, "Hey, since you've asked, this is actually the fair market rate for what I do. Let's talk soon!"

Just trolling for your thoughts...

Hello all, I'm hoping someone can answer this question for me.

I understand the permissions and licencing involved in recording/releasing a "cover" song, but what if you're just using one line?

I have an original song in which I quote two lines from "Pirate Jenny" of The Three Penny Opera. The melody is mine, the surrounding lyrics are all mine... do I need to contact the copyright holder for permission to use two lines of lyric?

Are there guidelines to follow?

Any advice is welcome! Thank you!

Ive been reading up on what it takes to a be a solo acoustic performer aboard a cruise ship and have a few questions

Whats the general type of music i should have ready in my repetoire?

how much would i be playing a day roughly?

Examples of tunes the audience on board usually like to hear?

Will i be expected to perform with the showband as my sight reading skills are quite poor

Is taking requests part of the gig?

how long between applying and getting out there, im hoping to be on board a ship by end of april

Any general information regarding this type of gig would be helpful, ive never done this type of gig before so anything would be helpful

thanks

First off, THANK YOU for this awesome site!

I am a young music director cutting my teeth in community, college, and children's theater. The biggest hurdle I have come across is programming keyboard patches, does anyone have MIDI based solutions? I just discovered RMS but don't think I will be comfortable enough in time for my next show (especially since it's a 2 piece pit) I use a Mac and ANY advice would be greatly appreciated, for now I'm manually changing patches and its even more stressful than playing the right notes!

So glad to have found this site and to join the conversation!

I'm hoping Cameron chimes in on this, especially.

I'm looking into building a home studio. I was wondering what's the best way to get started on a budget right now?

I'm thinking of this as a good start-up:

A good instrument microphone (of course): I haven't the foggiest where to start here. I'm borrowing a great live sound Shure wireless system for my trombone from my landlord, but I don't know that a wireless microphone was ever meant for recording. I need something to record my brass instruments, and perhaps to add some flavor to both electric and upright basses. I've heard stories that Marcus Miller puts a mic up by his left hand to get some of brightness from his bass. I'm not sure if that's true, but it would be an interesting experiment.

ART Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp: I've heard good things about this for mic recordings, and bass players love it even for live sound with both upright and electric basses. I don't know how it will do with brass instrument recording.

A small mixer: Probably unnecessary, but desired. I actually wouldn't mind going old-school with this to save on bread, but does it need to be powered if I go this route?

Audio interface: What am I looking for with this? If I have all the other gear before it in the chain, do I go with something simple, like an M-Audio Fast Track? Also, does an older laptop make latency an issue? What if the computer bogs down during the recording? Is that take wasted?

I have plenty of DAWs on this computer; I do quite a bit of transcribing and MIDI mockup transcriptions. So, while I don't have Pro Tools, I think I'm fine on the software end.

So, what's the verdict?

Happy New Year Everyone,

Of all the things that are on my long list of chores to get done for my career I have finally put creating my own personal website at the top of it. It being January 2, 2012 I feel like a dinosaur not having one.
I realize that I have a fairly successful rate of landing work when at a live audition when I'm referred to a director or company but my stuff isn't ready for "cold calls".

Here are my concerns with getting a website up and running. I'm confident that my colleagues here have all the answers I seek.

1. Best place to register for a domain name
2. I'm not only looking for a good price on web hosting, but also need an easy to use program/template for someone who doesn't speak html and is using an iMac with Lion OS. Is there a hosting company that is better at music websites than others? I would prefer to give my business to a musician who also has this kind of business on the side.
3. I'm grateful for all advice given.

I got a copyright notice from YouTube for one of my videos. It's a performance of my show band on my ship doing a Tom Jones medley. I got the video from the sound crew after the show; they were filming. There are two other performances from that same show uploaded to my channel, however, I did not get a copyright notice for them. What would be my legal rights to uploading the video, if I even have any?

Here's the video in question:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZpku28BZdA&list=UUgji_RsWg_KUBQL8S4lCH0w&index=4&feature=plcp

Not the greatest video, but until I can get better quality examples of my playing, I kind of need it to stay there.

I am a Music Ed. student in Chicago and graduate in roughly 2 years. After graduation I'm looking to find work on a cruise ship, possibly, or other things of that nature. My guitar chops are not my concern, I have 10 years of serious playing under my belt from all different genres. My drawback is my sight reading ability. I understand this is a huge disadvantage to me when looking for the type of work I will soon be looking for. With 2 years left before any huge auditioning takes place, what are some things that you guys have done to hone your sight reading, or what things would you have done? (websites, exercises, etc. And what does the sight reading look like for the Cruise lines or agencies? (Mostly jazz chords? mostly just melody?)

p.s. This is a great site and has kept me reading for awhile!

Patrick Colwell on "Backing Tracks"

Lately I have been experimenting with adding some backing tracks to my solo act (guitar, harmonica, vocals). I have been building the tracks on garageband, they are mostly just drum and bass but sometimes I will add keys or other instruments if the song requires (for example, the keyboard hook from Werewolves of London). I have the tracks on my iPad and could run the Pad into the board and just keep it on a music stand in front of me.

My thought process behind this is this: People go to clubs to dance. Yes sometimes people will sit and listen to mellow singer songwriter type stuff, but for the most part (at least in the clubs I play) people want to dance and to me that means rhythm. The full band that I am in (I play bass and sing lead vox) has built a good following and routinely packs these same clubs but I just haven't been able to get my solo thing to catch on.

I am looking at this idea as a way to differentiate myself from other solo acts and (hopefully) book more solo gigs. Have any of you ever used (or seen anyone use) backing tracks in a solo performance? As a musician do you consider this to be "cheating"?

I see that you can buy Logic Studio 9 for $499 or Logic Pro for $199 in the app store. I also saw Mainstage sold separately in the app store for $29.99. What are your opinions for the best way to go?

Nick Rosaci on "SOPA and AFM"

I received a letter from the AFM president condemning the SOPA opposition as "an onslaught of mistruths and great pressure to renege on their [political supporters] commitment."

I understand the need to protect copyright laws and such, but it seems that it was very unfair for the president of an organization that represents creative peoples both infamous and largely unknown to write off the opposition as lies. There are some very serious concerns with the new proposed bills that could affect sites like this one and mine.

There are a few issues I see on this:

1.) Megaupload gets taken down the day the voting happened. If the site was taken down after the bill hypothetically passed, everyone would have given SOPA the credit for the crackdown. Since it came down before the vote ever happened, it can no longer take credit. It looks to me as if enforcers actually planned to crack down on this site to coincide with it being the night the bill would have passed. Why were they still able to take down the site? Because laws protecting copyright already exist, but weren't enforced before.

2.) I believe Mr. Hair thinks that whatever he believes, everyone in the union believes, too. Some of us (likely many AFM members, after seeing all those numbers in the petitions) just couldn't support a bill that may have caused infighting within creative groups. What if Motown records didn't like that I have a video of myself performing with a band playing a Motown medley on my site to show my performance capabilities with a group? Could they take down my site, then take down YouTube for my uploading the video there?

This is right after he made that video against Lionsgate films. It just seems as if he picks the big fish to fry.

Down here in Orlando, I like the union members. We're all connected in this way, and the rehearsal space is great to have, and I like being the first to know about local auditions. I love that our local president does a great job representing the Disney and local Broadway musicians. Besides this, I haven't really seen anything that the union on a national level can do for me other than send me a copy of International Musician. I guess now I'm asking what the union at the national level can do for me?

What are other peoples' thoughts on this?

“Tip Jar” enhancement technique... do you have a tip to share?

I'm not posting this article debating the pluses and minuses of using a tip jar... I'm simply seeing what (tip jar) tools work best for your particular type of venue... where is is traditionally allowed.

Where tip jars are allowed, recommended or otherwise mandatory... does anybody have any tips (pun intended) on their ways of enhancing their revenue (via the “jar”)?

I either utilize a small plastic brandy glass (available at the larger party warehouses) or a ($10.00 US) plastic wine carafe tip jar with a removable bottom (amazon.com ASIN: B003NY0WZI )

I just wanted to pass along a suggestion regarding tip jars and tip jar signs since I recently purchased a Neon BlackBoard from amazon.com to help potential “tipsters” toward my tip jar.

Here's my amazon.com review on the ($7.50 US) UV Led Neon BlackBoard Stands on its Own Easel (ASIN: B005KSW3QG ) http://www.amazon.com/review/R1457LDBSW1D1D or you can read it below:

PROS - Inexpensive, Battery powered (with optional AC power capability), Acrylic plastic writing surface is recessed to prevent (most) accidental scratches. Highlighter is included and is made to clip (on the included mounting clip) on back - pen is always at the ready. The easel leg props up the frame very nicely.

CONS - None, but please note that the acrylic needs to be wiped off with a "wet" (not dry) cloth. It's not exactly the same as wiping off a whiteboard.

I play solo piano (full-time) and needed a unique yet elegant (ie: non-cheap) way to designate my tip jar...on a grand piano. This exceeded my expectations. It paid for itself the first minute with the first tip I got. Talk about a ROI! It also affords anyone to effortlessly look through the clear acrylic (to whatever is visible behind it), so as not to block anyone view. Sure beats a tacky tip jar sign or a large 2' x 3' blacklight enhanced acrylic sign. When the BlackBoard is turned off, all that is visible to the black frame. When it is turned ON, the fluorescent highlighted bright yellow words (mine is "TIPs") can be easily seen from over 100 feet. Draws the tipping audience over like a moth to a flame!!

I CAN'T BELIEVE I'm writing a review for something so inexpensive (hint: single digit price before taxes & shipping)! The "Neon BlackBoard" has me that impressed.

The fluorescent highlighter (included) was a very nice bright yellowish orange... one of the brightest (fluorescent highlighter) markers that I have owned for writing on these types of signs. And the frame holds the clear acrylic writing surface so that the acrylic is "recessed" on both sides, preventing any accidental scratches or smudges when packed tor transport. I was surprised that even in bright office light - this writifg on this puppy still stood out.

I bought 2 initially since I didn't want to take a chance on the units failing out of the box. Both worked fine. Haven’t tried the 4.5v DC power option yet, but the 3 AA's last for a decent amount of time. NOTE: I experimented and tried NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargeable batteries, but they seem to only last for about 2 hours before getting the signage dim. So Alciline (or DC power) might prove the best choices. At least this device gives you 2 power options.

GREAT CONVERSATION PIECE for the bartender or working musician in your life that works on "tips" to supplement their wages. GIVE EM AS A GIFT!!!

As a some-time ship musician myself I often follow news stories about the industry, and this is clearly a very major and unfortunate situation. Obviously there's a lot of speculation and hindsight going on out there, much but not all of which is certainly mis-informed. But it does call into question a lot of the safety procedures and management practices on this line in particular (or maybe all cruise lines).

Has anybody here worked for Costa? or got friends on the ship? What have you experienced or heard about, and how does it relate to your perception of how this accident unfolded? Was it bound to happen the way things are run there? Or was it really a freak occurrence that could have happened to any ship?

More generally, what does this news do to your thoughts about continuing to work on ships, or doing so for the first time?

funkyguitar on "Offered Free Skype Guitar Lessons - Trial Run Results"

For almost a year I've been promoting myself as a Skype guitar instructor. I prominently feature on my website that I am available as a Skype instructor, provide details about how online video lessons work, including a short 2 minute video of an actual lesson with a student using Skype so they can see what it looks like. I've posted on Craigslist offering Skype lessons, have it listed in my instructor profiles on websites such as Thumbtack.com, mention that I teach using Skype in my email newsletter, etc. All of these efforts yielded exactly zero Skype students. So I knew I had to try something else.

I decided to offer Skype lessons for free. I put the word out to all of those same outlets on Christmas Day, and offered lessons for free for a three week period, until January 15, explaining that since I hoped to continue teaching them for months to come, I am offering this deal as a chance to check out online video lessons at no cost. And if they sign up and decide that they're not for them, no hard feelings, I'm glad we tried. I figured if 'Free' doesn't help out with getting more students, nothing will.

During the three week period between Dec 25 - Jan. 15, I got four emails expressing interest. Out of those four, two of them followed through on taking a couple of lessons. One was a member of the Meetup group I organized, the Portland Guitar Group. The other email came from a drummer I used to play in a band with. His 8 year old daughter was interested. The guy from the guitar group took a couple of lessons and then said work was getting in the way of lessons, but seemed to indicate he'd like to resume at some point. The 8 year old also had a couple of lessons, but then no showed for the 3rd since her dad, who I was coordinating this with, had a busy work week and forgot about it. This week is a busy week for both of them, but say they want to resume when things settle down.

When I first advertised the free offer, I thought people might be beating down my door to sign up. It took me a little while to come to terms with the fact that I may be teaching hours of lessons for no pay. But after close to a year of marketing and promoting Skype lessons without any interest prior to this, I accepted it as an investment. In fact, a couple of friends of mine said it's a great idea. I'll likely do something like this again.

As it turned out, people weren't exactly beating down my door to sign up. I'm a bit disappointed that this offer didn't yield a steady student (yet). I think the main reason this hasn't happened is that I needed to make more people aware of the offer and promote it more. I also wonder to what extent a Skype teacher can expect to get new students if they've never met in person before.

Thought I'd share my experience with this, as Skype lessons pop up on this forum as a topic of discussion from time to time. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Hey,

So I finally resigned to my beautiful PC and got myself a Mac. Obviously I'm considering starting to record myself with Garageband for a few personal projects and I'm just wondering if it's actually worth it?
I'm in the process of downloading the Jam Pack to get the Bosendorfer sample and it's taking forever, so I thought I'd ask on here what you guys thought.

I'm pretty much technology-retarded hehe.

Is Garageband actually worth it for piano recordings? As in, will I get a good sound out of it and will it sound professional at all, or will it just sound like I did record it on Garageband?

Thanks for your input!

Few questions for gigging musicians:

-How many of you solo musicians have liability insurance?

-how much does it typically cost in the US?

-did anyone have a gig and at the last minute the venue asks if you have proof of liability insurance?

-if I run my business as a LLC, do I not need liability insurance?

Thank you everyone!

Hi, I'm in the process off setting up a company to publish songs I've written for my first CD. The CD also includes a version of an unpublished song written by a friend of mine. He's not a musician, and I can't imagine he'll want to set up his own publishing for just the one song. I was going to suggest to him to have his song published under my banner. I suppose I'd have to ask him to sign on with my performance rights organization as well. Assuming he likes the idea, is there anything else I need to consider? Thanks!

I've been having trouble with nerves lately. It's not all the time - just when things get tense at work and I'm feeling a lot of pressure to deliver.

It's very unsettling - I'm a seasoned pro, a grown man, and I've been doing this for most of my life. I've been in lots of high pressure situations before and I've always been able to deliver. What's the deal?

Interestingly it's not during performances. I play great during performances. It's in rehearsal, when I'm in a room full of big wigs and celebrities. Then suddenly I play like I have oven mitts on. It's embarrassing.

Has anyone successfully dealt with this kind of thing? I'm trying positive thinking, practicing, etc. None of the normal stuff is working.

It's high time I get a Sunday gig again. I used my teaching email as a template and changed wording to work for as a church musician, and I'm going to send it to all the church emails in the area I can find. Care to take a look and critique? Thanks in advance for the help!
_____________________________________________

Dear music ministers:

Firstly, I would like to apologize to the impersonal nature of this email; it’s just much faster to send everyone same email at once. There are quite a few churches in the area! And with my schedule, this is easier, albeit impersonal.

I have worked with some of you before, and have exchanged emails with others of you. If you don’t know me, I am a very active performer, teacher, and notation expert in the Orlando area. I'm fairly new to Orlando, but come from Palm Bay, and have come over here for the occasional Sunday service when I'm needed, but now I'm in the area.

If you would like to know more about me, you can find my information on my site, NickRosaci.com, and can find my musical performance abilities at http://nickrosaci.com/performer.html. A quick rundown: I am a professional performer on electric bass, double bass, and low brass. I have a jazz studies degree with a performance certificate from the University of North Florida, and am quite proficient on each instrument. I'm a sub bassist under music minister Wil Brown at First Presbyterian Church Orlando, and a sub bassist at Walt Disney's Grand Floridian Society Orchestra, as well as a freelancer all over the state.

As we begin a new year, I would like to send a reminder to you about me offering my services as a performer. I am very competent in both traditional and contemporary services. Some of you will be receiving more privatized emails, especially if I worked with you in the past.

If any of you are interested in my services, please feel free to contact me through this email. I am looking for at least a steady Sunday gig, and perhaps more if there is more available.

Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to hearing from each of you.

Sincerely,

I have been asked to accompany a high school musical, but I do not know what to charge. It will be 31 hours total for rehearsals and performances. In addition to that, there is the preparation/practice time. If anyone has suggestions, I would be very appreciative. Thanks!

Sorry if this was already covered in this blog but I am a young aspiring musician and started gigging on the side for weddings and special events. I admire the veterans who has been gigging for ages and knows the entire Great American Song Book/Jazz Standard book from cover to cover. I'm continuously building my repertoire but how do you guys deal with telling a patron "sorry, I don't know that song". Man, I lose my self esteem and confidence when I disappoint a patron. I'm always crossing my fingers they will ask for a song that I know.
