Hi, my name is Mak and I would like to introduce my band "Kreol" (meaning "Creole" on Croatian) for which I compose and arrange. The name derives from the known word for mixed languages / nations and in our context it reffers to blending of types of music into a new-old genre.
Short introduction:
Kreol has existed since 2008. in Zagreb, Croatia. The band is basically composed of self-thaught musicians. The basic of Kreol's music is that it tends to "borrow" rhythms/grooves from contemporary music styles (hip hop, funk, reggea, swing, drum and bass) while at the same time investigates complexity in harmonization, forms, counterpoints and "orchestration" .
Members:
Maja Rivić - vocal
Marko First - violin
Nikola Kukić - clarinet, alto saxophone
Mak Murtić - tenor saxophone
Ivan Marincel - trombone
Luka Smetiško - electric piano
Mario PerÄinić - double-bass
Mario Validžić - drums
Description of our recent musical project:
During the end of 2009. Kreol has started working on a project in a musical form of a suite named "The World Around Us". It deals with the currently accepted theory of human migration from subsaharan Africa to the rest of the world. It is concieved as a musical interpretation on events that have lead to the development of complex societies and civilisations, from basic tribal societies to contemporary urban and global ones today. Different musical scales are used to blend this story into a one worth travelling through. The suite consists of 8 passages.
The whole repertoire consists of this Suite, of other original compositions, some rearranged jazz and ethnic (Croatian, Serbian, Middle Eastern, AfroCuban) songs.

Kreol

with the initiative of Mak Murtic and Luka Smetisko. The starting idea of a regular jazz band was soon transformed by the addition of different instrumentalists and our own exploratory personalities. This resulted and still is resulting in forming a "typically ours" sound with the influences of tango, gypsy and klezmer music, calypso, funk, hip hop, different jazz styles, gypsy swing, Croatian and Savic music...
