Hi all,

I’ve been looking into learning banjo as a doubling instrument since so many pit guitar books call for them. However, my research on banjos has been a little inconclusive. Specifically, I have found that there are several types of banjos:

The standard 5-string
A 4-string called a "Plectrum" banjo that can be tuned like a guitar and played with a pick.
A 4-string called a "Tenor" banjo
A 6-string

According to Wikipedia, most musicals call for a 4-string model. Obviously, I would prefer to get one that can be tuned like a guitar’s top 4 strings. However, it seems 4-string banjos are not really sold anywhere anymore.

So, that leads me to my question:

What kind of banjo do pit books call for? Apparently the old shows all used some sort of 4-string. Do the books ever specify what type of banjo to use? Can I get away with a tenor banjo tuned like a guitar?

Best to all, and Happy Thanksgiving.
