Can someone explain to me the differences between an Associate Conductor and Assistant on a Broadway show,…and what their job responsibilities are.<br />
Thanks in advance!

Good question, and you'll probably find the answer very unsatisfying.

They are basically the same thing, with the same responsibilities.

However, "assistant" is usually considered below "associate" in the hierarchy. "Associate" seems to imply that the conductor and associate conductor are colleagues with less social/professional distance between their positions.

Thanks so much for your quick response David!
I appreciate the explanation… I had a feeling that both positions were somewhat similar, but I was quite sure. Thanks for clearing up the mystery.

One last question that I'm curious about is what is the role of a Musical Supervisor, and how does a Music Supv. rank in the hierarchy of the B'way orchestra compared to the Musical Director or Assoc Music directo– Does a Music Supv. have a bit more creative input with the musical Director and the shows music then lets say the assoc conductor,. . or is it pretty much just semantics, and it all depends on the show.
Thanks, GG

Another good question – the music supervisor is the head boss in a music team. The music supervisor is ultimately responsible for all creative decisions, all hiring, all firing – everything. They are above the music director in the hierarchy.

Often the music supervisor on a Broadway show is the person that was the music director or conductor of the show. If the show does very well, and multiple companies (tours, international shows, etc.) are formed, then this person is often promoted to music supervisor and oversees the music for all of the various companies.
