Hi all,

I will be moving to Southern California in the next few weeks (Ontario/LaVerne area) and am wondering if any of you know of companies or organizations hiring interns or employees in any music-related field?

I am exploring all my options to secure my visa to stay in the US and would love to hear about any leads any of you might have!

Thanks!

Hi Andree-Ann –

So you decided to move to LA! I’m surprised, I thought for sure we’d see you soon in NYC. Well, I’m sure you’ll be here sometime. Enjoy the weather out there.

If I hear of anything I’ll let you know. If you find any good resources let me know and we’ll add them to our Career Links page.

David!

First of all, congrats on the new site, it looks great!!

It certainly wasn’t an easy decision…up to a month ago, I was getting paperwork ready for London – even had my work visa application ready and what not!

But then love happened and now I’m headed to SoCal for the time being…I’m sure I’ll get to NYC sometime though…I love the city but it seems a bit suicidal for a recent grad to head out there without any concise idea of if I want to play jazz, classical or something else haha.

I will certainly let you know of any lead I can find – I’m still actively researching. You might wanna add a few orchestras in the area that looks for volunteers for their musical education programs…music docent position I believe it is called. Might be volunteer work, but some people might be interested! I know the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra goes out in schools alot and always look for people to help out with the education.

If anyone else knows about anything, please let us all know!!

Andree! I just moved to LA like a month ago myself. You’re about as far from LA as I am only in the other direction. I’m in Simi Valley at the moment.

I think you and I are doing the same thing right now. I’m currently looking up all the orchestras, chamber groups, operas etc, looking at their employment and intern or volunteer positions. I’ve found some interesting things so far. Some of their programs have already started actually now that we’re in the middle of the spring term.

I’m also looking for gigs. I just joined a band that has recently played some well known venues like The Whiskey a Go GO etc. Also looking for just general temp work to pay the bills. But I’m thinking that the best thing for me right now might be a good church job so I can have time to do some internships like what you’re talking about.

I have a whole slew of links I’ve been emailing myself of things I’ve found. If you feel like it I can send them to you if it helps. Let me know.

But let me know if you have any luck with anything and I”ll do the same.

Hey BPM,

That’s great! I would love to have your links – I can share my excel spreadsheet too :)

My email is andreeann.deschenes@gmail.com – if you don’t mind sharing the info, I will certainly sending you what I got as well.

My problem is that I’m Canadian – the visa thing is complicated. You would think US and Canada would work together on that one, but seriously, this country is impossible to penetrate unless you’re highly educated or have a billion dollar to invest in an American corporation!!!

Anyways, working hard on this project, and any help is welcomed!

OH I totally stole that idea from you, David!

I vaguely remember an article in which you mentioned spreadsheets…and I’ve been at it ever since!
