I'll be cruising in november and recently found a new love interest, and would like to communicate from the ship. Can it be done with a cell phone, or what about skype or some other form of audio communication via computer?
Thanks

Communicating with family and friends is one of the biggest complaints of cruise ship musicians. It is a pain. A lot of your time and money can be spent on communicating back home.
Everyone that works on ships is in the same boat, if you'll pardon the pun. There are a lot of structures set up to help everyone communicate with people back home (phones, internet cafes, etc.). Nevertheless, its expensive and inconvenient.
Which is the long way of saying, yes, you can stay in contact. But it will be a pain.
Read more in the cruise ship blog about this. I wrote about it alllllll the time.
I've done 4 contracts with Royal Caribbean, and there are a few options for communicating. You can buy "Ocean Phone" cards which is like a calling card, for $5, $10, or $20. $20 calling a land-line gives you quite a while, if you call a cell phone, the time gets considerably less.
There is also the internet on board, but it's slow and expensive. Depending on the ship, it can range from $.06 / minute to $0.36 / minute. Internet is a pain in the ass to find on a contract, and when you find it, it's usually slow.
