Gig Dilemma

I think I know the answer to this but I'm going to throw it out anyway...

I committed to do a show last fall for the spring of 2010. I got a call last week for another show for the same weekend. (The date can't be changed. I already asked the MD who I've known for long time.) The second gig pays a little more. However, I've worked with the group for the first show for the past 7 years. Would it be acceptable to find a sub for the first gig and take the second or find a sub for the second and take the first?

It's funny, you lobby for work and then it all comes at once!

  2. This is what a friend of mine said about it. I would do the same thing, if I'm ever lucky enough to have the problem!

I freelance, and I work on a first come, first served basis. If someone calls me for a $100 gig and I accept it, and then immediately get a call for a $300 gig, I'm already booked. A lot of guys chase the buck, but folks know when they hire me, they have me. The only times I cancel is if I get called for a tour. 2 weeks or so worth of works trumps a gig, and everyone I work with understands that. The second I have a conflict, I tell folks. I can't afford bad feelings from bad business...

Yup, that's what I thought and that's what I'm gonna do. I committed to the gig and I'll stay with the gig. Cementing good relationships is more important that chasing the "buck".

Thanks Joe and thank your friend for me too!

  4. Hey DC -

Yeah, I say stick with the first gig. Unless it pays waaaay more, you gotta make sure you stay reliable. My Ma used to say that your nothing if you ain't reliable. It's the most valuable thing you have.

Agreed. We're talking the difference of $150 bucks and I can live with that.
