Hi, my hubby & I have a pop/variety lounge duo and are ready to start applying for cruise ship work. We have some questions regarding Medical Health insurance. Do most ships provide coverage while you're contracted, and to what extent? If so, does coverage apply if you're hired through an agency, and not directly by the cruise line? If not, can anyone suggest a good, affordable Health Insurance Plan for cruise ship workers?

Thanks!

Hi drifter -

Great question. I think it depends on the ship. I remember when I was on a ship in 2004 we were told that we had health insurance while we were with the ship – but it had a cap of $15k. So if we were injured or sick and it cost over $15k we were out of luck (aka: not very good insurance).

As to where to find affordable health insurance…I'm not sure. I have a catastrophic policy with BC/BS that's very affordable, but it doesn't cover much.

Thanks for the information, David. Yikes! 15K sure wouldn't go far if you needed surgery or some kind of emergency care. I'll have to do some serious shopping for a good international health plan. We'll be leaving good coverage with our land-based employers (non-music jobs that we're glad to get rid of), so if anyone else has suggestions we'd really appreciate the help!
