Hi,

I’m a violinist considering accepting a contract on a ship. Is it ever possible to leave the ship for a few days? I’m also applying for scholarships, and there is a possibility I would have to attend an interview in D.C. for the fall. In the event that I were a finalist, would I just be screwed, or is there any possibility of attending the interview and still keeping the job?

In my experience, you have to be on the ship to perform unless there is a medical or family emergency, however, an old bandmaster of mine once told me that on ships, where there is a will there is a way, so it would certainly be worth asking about, especially if you are in an ensemble that could possibly continue to perform on the ship without a violin.

I’ve heard the same thing klemmaniac has. I’m a little less optimistic. That would be a hard sell for you to get off for a few days.

You might be better off trying to book a contract through an agent until October, or whenever the interview is. Tell them that you are available immediately until that time and see if they have anything. Sometimes they do.
