Hi all! I’ve been looking for places to post my link so folks will
find my free music. If this isn’t an appropriate forum for that let
me know. You can find my music here
http://taylorhayward.org/freemusic.htm . I made it royalty free and
it’s currently being used in about three-hundred videos on the web.
Enjoy!

Well, we don’t allow any self-promotion on MusicianWages, so normally I would delete this. But I’m intrigued – why would you spend the time promoting music that you’re not planning on making any money with? What’s in it for you?

This is very interesting, actually, because the idea of free music is something all artists might take a look from a strategic perspective. I’m thinking specifically about what Moby has done with mobygratis, where he gives a specific license for non-profit use. It’s a fantastic idea and makes it clear which pieces he allows the use and which he does not. It lets him know who is using his music and it gives him a built-in audience for new music, as well as a place to test versions on an audience that he knows likes his music to begin with. My musical taste is quite different, so I wouldn’t say I’m a fan, but I’ve always kept a watch for what Moby does, because he’s clearly brilliant. And, successful.

I agree – designating some music for non-profit use is very interesting. I hadn’t heard of that.

I’ve started giving my music away for free too lately. I realize that it’s difficult to make any money on the consumer level with recorded music, but media placements still pay. And there’s no way to get media placements unless people hear my music. So I’m giving it away too.
