Hello all,
In many other professional field, we often hear about mentoring; an established professional helping out a student or newly graduate by offering advice, helping out in anyway (well everybody kinda knows what mentoring is). I was wondering if anybody had heard of something like that being possible for musicians. For example, how do you approach reknowned players and enquire about lessons (overseas, other country, locally, etc).
I, myself, am a piano player and have been thinking for a while of studying and learning with established jazz teachers in another location as I am now, and I wanted to ask if anybody at MW had ever had any experience of the sort or any advice to give on how to score really great established players as teachers. I have tried getting lessons with Fred Hersch, but have been told that he only takes advanced students like Ethan Iverson and Brad Mehldau, for example. Obviously I am far from being of that level in my jazz playing, but would still be honored to have the chance to have a kind of mentoring by such a player.
Anybody has any experience to share or advice to give?
Thanks!
Andree-Ann
