Hi all –

Ok, I have to make a new rule.

I notice that a few members are posting would-be articles as forum posts. I’ve given it a lot of thought, and I’ve decided it has to stop. I have 3 reasons:

1.) This is our forum, not our blog. It should be used as a forum.

2.) To a first time visitor (or search engine), it might seem like this is a guest blog. We make it difficult to guest blog for MusicianWages because we want to keep the quality top-notch. If you would like to guest blog for us, you need to contact us and go through all of the proper channels. There is a strict acceptance policy and most articles are not accepted. This is just how it is.

3.) I find it annoying. Posting articles in the forums seems like a sneaky way to get around our editorial process, reach our lovely and loyal readers, and get free SEO links. I don’t like it. I think it’s using the site in a way that is not useful to our readers – and anything that is not useful to our readers is not allowed on the site.

If your article is good enough to post on MusicianWages.com, then contact us and go through the proper channels to make it a guest blog. Otherwise – everyone knows the proper way to use a forum.

Thanks, Dave. As you know, that has been a pet peeve of mine, too.

Also, while I know that the majority of offenders don’t come over to the forums, I would like to mention another pet peeve of mine, which is in the comments sections of the articles.

Some people come by just to promote their musical act and post a link. Some post asking Dave for a gig. Still, the best ones are the ones that post on an article that might be titled, say, “How To Get a Job As a Cruise Ship Musician,” and their comment usually goes something like this:

“Hi, I would like to work as a cruise ship musician. Can someone email me and tell me how?”

What gets me about that is that they just scrolled past all the information that they were asking for.

In all of these situations, it’s obvious the poster did not bother to read the article. In my opinion, it’s quite rude, and in each situation, people are just essentially asking for a handout–which also cheapens the whole spirit of this website. It’s called “the community for the WORKING musician”. Not “the BEGGING musician”.

I have been away from the site for a few days, and when I came back today, I noticed posts doing each of the above. This is a classy site, and I would like to see it stay classy.

Dave, if this post is in all out of line, feel free to delete it.

Nick

I’d also like to add that Dave and I cannot sign anybody, unless you mean with a marker somewhere on your body, although I’m hesitant about that, too.

Also, if anybody would like personal assistance on a topic of any article on the site, every author is available to hire as a consultant or coach. I recommend first reading the article to see if your question has been answered (duh), if not, ask the question in the comments, and then decide if you really need help beyond the answers from the community.

You guys mind if I ramble a little bit about my results w/Effortless Mastery? –or would that fall under the new clutter guidelines? I enjoy this site a great deal, and do not want to make myself a nuisance here.

That’s more than fine. What you are doing with the book is exactly what’s encouraged on the forum.

What’s annoying us is that people come here for the sole task to see how they can make a buck off of this site in one way or another. The “articles” written in the forums are by people looking for more hits to their own website, where they will try to get a gig out of those visits. Asking the hosts for a gig or to sign them is from people who obviously didn’t take the time to read the site, and think Dave and Cam are looking to find the next big act or something. It’s just the rampant selfishness we don’t like.

If it’s part of the discussion, it’s totally fine. The forums are for community discussions, sharing ideas and results from our careers and getting feedback from each other. As long as it’s part of the appropriate thread, then you’ll be alright! We’re always glad to see you on the site.
