Hello All. I am creating a greeting service that basically provides customers with a video singing telegram. Each telegram is personalized to include an "Oldies" (Sinatra Style) cover song and will be transmitted to the customer as a personal web page with the video performance embedded.

In the video, I am singing/performing the song to background tracks. From what I am reading, this sounds like I will be needing a synchronization license for each song. Is this correct, and if so, what are the most basic steps for me to take to get licensing for such a project? Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Hi, I’m new here and hope I can help. You do need a sync license which will allow you to “sync” the music to picture. You don’t need a Master license as you will be creating your own recording of the music. The sync license can be obtained from the copyright holder which is usually the publisher. Start by searching the ASCAP and BMI databases. If you find the song registered there it will contain the contact information for the publisher. Contact the publisher to get the sync license. There is no set fee like for a mechanical license. The publisher can choose whatever amount suits them. Good luck!
