Hi. I was hoping to take a vacation in Canada after finishing my contract in LA before heading back to Australia. I was hoping to pay extra to change my ticket back home and use it after travelling to Canada. Am I allowed to do this or does the company require me to fly home first? I don't really want to fly home then fly back to North America, then fly home then fly to my next ship!

That sounds like a question you'd need to ask the cruise director or music director about. I think I've seen that happen before, but it all depends on the ship and whether the people working there care enough to go out of their way to help you.

Changing flight details for your contract is almost an IMPOSSIBILITY. Keep in mind that I said "Almost".
Most cruise lines have this thing that they have to adhere to called "Repatriation" that says any crew member signing off must be in their country of origin (the address listed in your contract) by 48 hours after signing off. Period. In order to change flight details, you have to change your country of origin address. Meaning, you have to have documents saying you're a citizen of that country.
Check with crew administrator. Chances you could be able to change details, but it will be on your dime. You can also choose to not use the flight that the cruise line gives you to go home, you must NOTIFY them that you are doing so, and that return flight is also on your dime.
Sorry to be a negative nelly, but...with 1000 crew members on average per ship, and say 8 ships in a fleet = 8000 crew members that want to return to Bora Bora, or the Caribbean on the cruise ship lines' dime. See?

So are you saying that if you were to intentionally miss your flight home you would have to pay for it?
