An interesting interview about the musician/arranger/composer Johnny Mandel was posted today at JazzWax.com.

Johnny Mandel went about a musician career the same way a lot of us still do. He went to Manhattan School of Music and Juilliard and worked as a sideman for Buddy Rich, Jimmy Dorsey and jazz violinist Joe Venuti. He worked his way up to arranger and worked with enough famous people to make him famous in his own right – Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones and Natalie Cole.

This guy is a musician’s musician and the interview is a great conversation with a guy who’s career spanned much of the recording industry’s recent history.

The first part of the interview was posted today, with part 2 promised tomorrow.
