Thanks for the great article - really practical straightforward advice.

One of the biggest reasons to be very thorough about invoicing is to avoid confusion and acrimony later. We had an issue recently where we hadn't been issuing invoices for weekly music lessons, and we ended up getting into a lengthy debate with the student about which checks covered which lessons - which was stressful and wasted a lot of time. In the end we got it all sorted out, but careful invoicing would have prevented this whole situation.

I also wanted to stress the importance of requesting people to "pay on receipt". Money now is vastly better than money later, not least due to the hassle of chasing down missing payments. If you've given someone Net-60 terms then that means you (and they) have to remember 2 months later that they need to pay you, and it makes it far more difficult to remember the details of the work if there's any disagreement.

A good thing for all musicians to know.

I think an invoice would work great as another means of reinforcing a contract. Having the two go hand in hand would really secure the deal and keep everyone on the same page.

Look for the word Invoice.
