In the end we got it all sorted out, but careful invoicing would have prevented this whole situation. I also wanted to stress the importance of requesting people to "pay on receipt". Money now is vastly better than money later, not least due to the hassle of chasing down missing payments. If you've given someone Net-60 terms then that means you (and they) have to remember 2 months later that they need to pay you, and it makes it far more difficult to remember the details of the work if there's any disagreement. I think an invoice would work great as another means of reinforcing a contract. Having the two go hand in hand would really secure the deal and keep everyone on the same page.
