Really interesting post, and I totally agree with everything you say in it - especially about keeping it professional despite being on a casual tool. Facebook has been amazing for me so far, but I want to add that Twitter has become an incredible tool for me to use as well...

I've been followed by a few MD's/muso's on Twitter and as I've read down my feed on many-a-time I've read interesting posts, followed a link or two and discovered some really interesting (and funny) musicians along the way.

It's far easier to follow people on Twitter, than on Facebook, and assuming you don't end up on the 'stalker' line as they update about their day to day workings I've found it such a good link. I've recently managed to set up a meeting with one high profile MD by meeting him and introducing myself in person, and another for two weeks time by tweeting him about the show he's touring with in my local town just now - two flip sides where both worked excellently!

The only draw back is that you can't personal message someone on Twitter without them following you back, and this has put me off introducing myself on more than one occasion. Also - the 140 character limit does prove to be a bit challenging sometimes!

George, I think you can create groups within your friends list and choose which groups wall posts you see or don't see.

And I think you should stick to one profile. Having two will make it more work than it's worth. Facebook won't help you get gigs, but it'll help you stay on the radars of people who might be able to get you a gig someday.

I just had a question and was hoping for some input. I have a facebook account which I have had for a few years now. I am a musician looking for gigs but the problem is a lot of my friends are not musicians, so my wall is always filled with status updates that have nothing to do with music. I made another facebook account recently to add only musicians to, but deactivated it. One reason I did was people who were not musicians wanted me to add them as a friend, and I did not want to offend them by not adding them. Do you think making another facebook page to add musicians only is a good idea or am I making things overly complicated? I still want to keep my old account to stay in touch with non-musician friends, but I want to get the most out of facebook. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Oh yeah, one other thought: FB and MySpace have certainly been useful to me for maintaining contacts and ultimately getting a gig or two, but what I actually do is use a variety of methods of maintaining contact with people. I would never lean too heavily on any one site or method. Then again, I am not a big "facebooker", so I don't find it wildly fun or interesting in any circumstance.

Well done. Some people have one FB account for close friends, family, etc, and another that's for professional networking.

Another benefit to messaging a potential contact on Facebook is that they (and you) can see your mutual friends/contacts. Facebook, in effect, drops names for you so you don't have to.

Naturally, they'd have to click on your profile to see this, but it's still a nice feature.
