Today, almost any body can build a home recording studio. You can start by looking for free and demo software on the internet. One web site is my favorite I found this years ago it’s called Hitsquad.com, you can google the name and it should be easy to find. Hope this helps! you on your search for information about the recording business…
keep up the great job!!

Hi. I'm planning to build a $250-$300 computer (I already have a 5.1 home theater system with 12" subwoofer that I bought years ago) and I've been researching whether to go with pro audio or a consumer sound card for music creation. But because I have to live with the limitation, once I read the article, I scratched that and go with an on-board sound card. I'll be using either 64 Studio or UbuntuStudio 64-bit for an AMD64 system. (My $300 subwoofer (bought during 2007) and $300 home theater receiver (bought during 2005) that I got for Christmas years ago came separate from cheap speakers that came with cheap KOSS HT receiver+DVD player combo that I threw away due to old receiver being so noisy, but that's irrelevant anyway).

I like to make music and I'm not good with writing lyrics, so mics aren't needed for me. I like to make electronica music with a bit of new age. Not that I'm a pianist since I used to use a piano roll to make music in the past, I do have a 49-key keyboard controller (basic M-Audio Keystation 49) when it comes to testing sounds.

Some of what I mentioned may not be relevant to this article, but when it comes to limitations that I can get around with, it's something that I can live with it, like my cheap plastic speakers (I know -- I must buy monitors but I can't afford it), I live in an apartment complex, I a college student, my source of income comes from Social Security Income, etc.

Thanks for taking your time to write this article. I'm all for wanting to have fun creating music. :)

MW why do you think this is a stupid article? There are a lot of talented guys out there who just lacks the money or the experience to record a good song. Talent is not everything in this business you know? I have to thanks Cameron Mizell for writing this article. Gave me some ideas :)

There are tons of recording faq's online these days. As someone who spent years recording my band and others with little to no experience, then acquired some years of experience in pro recording situations, I almost always find these to be poorly thought through or written, inexperienced, or just plain dumb. In the end my qualifications don't mean much, but hopefully give some context to the fact that I'm grateful to read a well stated and accurate lesson on the fundamentals of getting a great recording. Thanks.

It's always a good idea to get a few sets of experienced ears on your album whether you're doing the work or not, that's for sure. Especially for the sake of hearing it through different sound systems and slowing yourself down. Rushing the process is one way to guarantee that you won't like the way it sounds later!

Mastering is very tough to do yourself - I've done it, but would really rather someone else did it, if for no other reason than getting a second opinion and another's stamp of approval.

Great post tho - thanks for this!

We've struggled many time with whether to hire a producer or not, always turns out better when we do. Also, mastering is def something to plan in a budget! I've ran out of money before that step many times.
