Excellent article!
The only thing that Elizabeth forgot to mention is that it's been scientifically proven that recordings with real horn sections sell 53% more tracks than those without horns. The same study also showed that using synth horns greatly increases ones chances of catching swine flu.

Nice one, Elizabeth!
Everyone with a mic should read this. If there's one thing I can't stand is walking into a studio with no mic stands or mics set up. At least two hours of everyone's time is wasted waiting for "the dude" to set up.

Exactly: This is great stuff. Quite a spectrum of different situations we all have run into. That last session we did in Jersey was a great example of getting taken care of in all the best ways. Amen... I have to remember the arranging/composing part next time when I establish a rate with someone. I forget that there is gads more experience they are drawing on when they ask us to make up our own stuff. Good writing, DW!

This is terrific advice, worth boiling down into a checklist and repeating over and over before recording. I recently worked with a cellist and arranger for the first time and could have used this article. I asked for a simple part and got back a wild, untamed arrangement, which was excellent but took way more time than we were expecting. Also, I hadn't thought through the fact that a cellist might need a different kind of headphones than a guitar player. We improvised with some earbuds but that could have been thought through earlier.

Thanks for the great article!
