Musicians Locked out of New York Musical

The producers of the New York-based production of Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding recently fired their musicians and replaced them with pre-recorded music. The musical has performed in New York City for more than 20 years, using only live musicians during that time.

Musicians and live music fans are encouraged to write or call the producers of Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding and complain. The producer’s contact information is below.

Were the musicians given any advanced notice? Whether they did or not, recorded music is no replacement for the live musicians who were fired. If I was a member of the audience expecting the same live music I’ve come to expect for 20 years, I would be outraged and demand my money back.

The New York Times wrote about this today:

Not only were the musicians given little or no notice, it looks like the producers broke a valid labor contract with the musician’s union.

Dude? Ouch. Is this what music appreciation has come down to? And from PRODUCERS? Well, I suppose, speaking from a strictly business side, I can see where they’re coming from. Still.

As for the musicians: keep moving! Keep focusing on your passion! Hard times come at the least appropriate moments – that’s what makes them hard. Have the resilience to spread your wings as wide as you can and exercise that responsibility and take full participation in your well being. Especially in these times and this economic climate, relying on external sources or conditions is not advisable to do right now.

Wasn’t there a huge brewhaha last week in Australia over Britney not performing “live” on her Circus tour!? Especially at $85-$250/ticket I’d feel conned.

Yes, the producers settled. I received this from an AFM 802 board member:

“We have a deal at Tony and Tina’s. They went from a guarantee of two shows a week to a guarantee of one show per week. I have been told that the musicians are satisfied.”
