I think you’re right about the meta tags for search engines – but I find that meta tags still are very useful for contextual advertising (i.e. Adsense). We get a lot more relevant ads if our meta tags are well constructed.

Of course, adsense concerns are irrelevant to most band sites.

Good tips, I would say more emphasis these days is definitely on your external links. Google in particular seems to emphasize high quality sites providing relevant links to your site. Many tools of the past (meta description tags) are practically worthless these days in the eyes of most engines.

Musicians should also beware of most SEO companies as many of them employ black hat tactics like the link farms you mentioned. The keyword optimization is fairly straightforward, you or your web pro should be able to handle it on your own.
