Hi Daniel -

I wish there was a good answer for that one. If you don't have a lot of experience my advice is this:

1.) Emphasize your training, education and what little experience you do have. List your training and education first, then experience.

2.) Don't over do it. If you don't have a lot of experience, don't create a resume that looks like you do. It'll look like you'd overcompensating. It's hard to get the first few jobs when you don't have experience, but that's just how it goes. After you've worked for a few years you'll have a lot more to put on your resume, so be patient,

Could you please elaborate about the bit at the end about getting your first gig? What do you put on a resume if you have no real credits (hence, "first gig")?

Great article.

For all us PC people, there is an add on for MS Word that you can download and install from microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=F1FC413C-6D89-4F15-991B-63B07BA5F2E5&displaylang=en) that allows you to save files as a pdf. It's free, too.

Just wanted to say, as a fresh-out-of-school musician, this website helped me a ton! Thanks for the direction...I've been writing all sorts of resume's lately, and the only one I was unsure of how to organize is the career I went to school for!

This article was a big help. I think the 5 second exercise you brought up was important to keep in mind. I wonder how much of my resume would be easy to recall after a quick glance.

The OpenOffice Suite at: www.openoffice.org
contains a free suite of programs (Word Processor, Spreadsheet & more) that are available for Mac, Windows, Linux & more. They are not only compatible with MicroSoft Office but you can easily make a PDF of any file with the click of a single button.
